Winter 2026: Collectif Malunés & Arne Sabbe
In Ki No Nagare, which means ‘flowing energy’ in Japanese, martial arts and contemporary acrobatics merge. Collectif Malunés & Arne Sabbe worked on their latest creation in the spring of 2026 before the show premiered.
From 23 February to 6 March, the company was in residence at the Blikfabriek before premiering the show at the PerpleX circus festival in Kortrijk. Two weeks later, the show was performed for the first time in Antwerp during the MAD Festival on 17, 18 & 19 April.
In the performance, three performers meet in a world where the distinction between duet and duel becomes blurred. Arne Sabbe spent years immersing himself in aikido: a Japanese martial art in which you use your opponent’s strength to restore harmony rather than to overcome them. They weave this physical language seamlessly with partner acrobatics. Somersaults become figures, a throw becomes a seat, a fight becomes a dance.
Ki No Nagare deliberately takes no side. The performance does not preach about violence or reconciliation, but presents images in all their ambiguity, with a sense of humour.
Live music by Japanese percussionist Tsubasa Hori envelops the performance: taiko drums, singing bowls and koto alternate with electronic layers. A performance that moves just as its title promises: fluid, powerful and poignant.
Ki No Nagare continues its tour through Europe.
