She grew up in the mountainous state of Montana (United States), ended up at the circus school ESAC in Brussels, and never returned home. Good news for us, as on April 15 and 16, we welcome circus artist Marina Cherry to MAD Festival with her performance Only Bones v.1.6. Circusmagazine had a conversation with the young contortionist.

Contortio-what? Contortionism (or contortion) is a way of moving in which limbs are bent, stretched extremely, and the body takes unnatural postures. In Only Bones v.1.6, Marina Cherry alternately scratches, creaks, wriggles, hums, sprints, and tiptoes through the small space. With her movement language, she expresses the complexity of the funny animal that is the human.

It's a rare gift to be able to fold your limbs into all sorts of unnatural positions. This sometimes also results in strange looks, Marina Cherry tells Circusmagazine. "I had to accept that what I do is very strange, and that it's okay. When people see something that doesn't seem possible in an everyday context, it shocks them. I think there's something in that I can artistically exploit."
